A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
